As explained above, the complete development of the breasts is completed with the first pregnancy by the development of structures allowing lactation.
A galactophoric duct divides successively into lobules to form intralobular galactophoric ducts, where several acini open. The lobules consist of the intra-lobular connective tissue and the acini. The lobe consists of all the lobules drained by a galactophoric duct. There are about 20 lobes per mammary gland.
The state pregnancy causes breast changes due to the hormone surge. The breast becomes heavier due to the growth of acini which develop in clusters at the ends of the canals. The areola becomes pigmented and enlarges in diameter The breast enlarges. The nipple protrudes, and the areola becomes pigmented and grainy. This grainy appearance results from the protrusion of Morgagni tubers, called Montgomery tubers, during pregnancy and lactation.
