In the classic form of sickle cell disease or sickle cell anemia, there are only abnormal hemoglobins Hbs or Hbc in large quantities. In the S beta-thalassemia form, there is hemoglobin (Hb) S (the abnormal hemoglobin that causes sickle cell disease) and beta-thalassemia genes. However, beta-thalassemia results from a decrease in the production of the beta-polypeptide chains of hemoglobin due to either mutations or deletions of the beta-globin gene, which leads to an alteration in the production of hemoglobin A.
Symptoms of Sickle Cell S Beta-Thalassemia
Beta-thalassemia major is manifested by:
